What a show, what a show!
Just got back today from the trip to Greensboro to see Van Halen. It lived up to all my expectations save one issue and I will get to that later. David Lee Roth was absolutely the best front man I have seen since Bono and maybe for stage presense he may have been better. Eddie could still play the riffs from back in the day and remember that I have never seen them live before, only on t.v. so I have nothing to look back on. There were times that I thought he may have missed a note but since the band was not playing exactly like the songs I willnever know if he played that way on purpose or was missing notes.
I will say that when he did his solo and then went into playing "Eruption" he was hitting every note.
Let me start this over....
This concert was better than I had imagined after I had waited all of my life to see. They played all and I mean all of the songs that I remembered, although not in their entirerty, and wanted to hear from back in the day. David's voice was perfect. He hit every note. He was a true perfomer on stage and made me wish even more that I could have seen them years ago. I did want him to do his flying "V" kick but he did had enough stage presence to make up for that. Alex was on target with drum solos and hitting every beat. True Van Halen sound. Wolf did real well when he had too like at the beginning of "Running With the Devil" but you could tell he was not at level that he soon will be. And then there was Eddie. What can I say? It was his show. That man can flat play. He was hitting notes that I had no idea were part of the song. I have read tableture and song books but do not remember any of these notes. He is a great guitarist.
The show started with "You Really Got Me Now". They played for over two hours and finished with "Jump". There were only two things which I would call "negatives" and only one was what I thought uncontrollable. Sometimes the songs became muddied. After all of the shows I have seen lately I think that is due to the venue. For example when I saw Shinedown, they were playing at the Tennessee Theatre. They sounded great. When I saw Three Doors Down, Breaking Benjamin and now Van Halen they were all at colisuems and all of there sounds became muddied at times. I will say that when Ed was doing some solos and Dave was singing they were both on target and I sure am thankful I got to go see them rock! The other was that they were not keeping close to the songs they wrote. But who cares, right? It was not a big deal at all. Some songs that Dave improvised with were even better.
If I had it to do all over again I sure would do it! But in saying that, at this time I do not plan on taking long solo road trips again to see a band play or anything else for that matter. In conclusion, rock on Van Halen, rock On! I enjoyed the show. Now if my ears would quit ringing.
